About the Music

From the ornate courts of 18th-century Vienna to the red dust of Mt Isa, this world premiere event celebrates the people and places that have inspired composers with new possibilities.

In short:

  • In 18th-century Vienna, Mozart befriended clarinetist Anton Stadler, whose expressive playing had such a profound impact on Mozart that it expanded the possibilities of the composer’s music and inspired some of his most well-known works for the clarinet, including his cherished Clarinet Quintet.

  • Over two centuries later, it was William Barton’s grounding and deeply moving didgeridoo playing that elicited an oeuvre of work from legendary Australian composer Peter Sculthorpe, with the late composer declaring “William offered me a new direction”. Sculthorpe’s String Quartet No. 16 includes an additional part for the didgeridoo.

  • Acknowledged as Australia’s leading didgeridoo virtuoso, and also a prolific composer and cross-genre collaborator, William Barton will premiere a new work written for didgeridoo, clarinet and string quartet, commissioned by Omega Ensemble for this tour.
