ENSEMBLE Q & WILLIAM BARTON

A KALEIDOSCOPE OF SOUND

Old meets new and new meets old when a crack team of classical virtuosos team up with the boundless sonic imagination of William Barton to explore Brahms, Ligeti and more. Wrap yourself in a kaleidoscope of sound with Ensemble Q.

What are the sonic possibilities when the oldest wind instrument in the world – the didgeridoo – teams up with instruments that found their final form only two centuries ago? And who better to explore them than distinguished artist and composer William Barton?

Ensemble Q is a group powered by the passion and fizz of curiosity and underpinned by the virtuosic integrity of some of Australia’s finest musicians. It might just be the perfect playground for making music. Their ear-catching program includes works by William Barton and Paul Dean alongside hand-picked masterpieces by Brahms and Ligeti, which promise to wrap audiences in a multi-faceted kaleidoscope of sound.

"The possibilities are extraordinary. [William Barton] is a great man. He radiates. "

— Sir Simon Rattle

"[Ensemble Q was] quite possibly the best performance I’ve seen all year and an astonishing feat of music-making...Frankly, this was a jaw-dropping performance."

— Limelight

Barton & Brodsky - CMNZ SERIES (Auckland)

Barton & Brodsky

The pairing of incomparable didgeridoo virtuoso William Barton together with the musicians of the Brodsky Quartet is a sensational combination and a first for New Zealand audiences.

Programme

Henry Purcell | FantasiaPeter Sculthorpe | String Quartet No 11Robert Davidson | MinjerribahLeoš Janáček | String Quartet No 2Igor Stravinsky | Three pieces for String QuartetSalina Fisher | Tōrino - echoes on pūtōrino improvisations by Rob ThorneAndrew Ford | String Quartet No 7: Eden AblazeTraditional Irish Folk Song | She Moved through the FairWilliam Barton | Square Circles

Artists

William Barton, DidgeridooBrodsky Quartet:Krysia Osostowicz, Violin lIan Belton, Violin llPaul Cassidy, ViolaJacqueline Thomas, Cello

The programme unites icons of the classical canon with Barton’s own music, along with the New Zealand premiere of Andrew Ford’s quartet written during the bushfires of late 2019. Australian composer Peter Sculthorpe resonates alongside New Zealand’s Salina Fisher, with Janáček and Stravinskykeeping the energy and excitement of this remarkable programme high from start to finish.

William Barton is Australia’s most celebrated didgeridoo virtuoso. The sounds that he creates from this apparently simple, elemental instrument are quite extraordinary; his performances generate awe, even disbelief, in his listeners. His didgeridoo virtuoso has earned him the honour of performing with prestigious orchestras that include the Berlin Philharmonic under Sir Simon Rattle.

With 50 years of music making to their credit, Britain’s Brodsky Quartet are phenomenal collaborators and have crossed paths with other artists such as Elvis Costello, Björk and Dawn Upshaw. The Brodskys, who have for a long time been enthusiastic advocates of Sculthorpe’s quartets, fulfilled their long time wish to perform with William Barton through several collaborations in recent years.

CMNZ is delighted to be presenting Barton & Brodsky in Wellington in association with Aotearoa New Zealand Festival of the Arts and in Auckland with Te Ahurei Toi o Tāmaki Auckland Arts Festival.

Australian Chamber Orchestra & William Barton - RIVER - TOUR

River - A cinematic odyssey exploring the waterways that have shaped our world, in all their majesty and fragility.

River is a visceral experience that is both dream-like and urgent. At its one-off premiere performance in 2022, reviewers said – “River does not request your attention. It demands your surrender.” – SMH ★★★★

For millions of years, rivers shaped landscapes and sustained communities. In flow, flood and drought, rivers gave life and carried it away. In two short centuries, humans have begun to re-shape rivers. We build dams upstream to sustain our cities. We alter flood plains and vary flows. Downstream, the changes can be catastrophic.

ACO Artistic Director Richard Tognetti and Director Jennifer Peedom follow their acclaimed Mountain with this cinematic exploration of the waterways that have shaped our world. On screen, the rivers flow in rhythm and harmony with music from outstanding composers. The result is an awe-inspiring combination of timeless music, captivating cinematography, and distinctive narration from award-winning actor Willem Dafoe.

The score features iconic works by composers including Bach and Ravel, music by Jonny Greenwood and Radiohead, and new original music by Richard Tognetti and peerless Indigenous composer William Barton. The soundtrack won ARIA & AACTA awards. Performed live by Richard Tognetti and the ACO, alongside Jennifer Peedom’s astonishing visuals, the effect is even more powerful.

WASO MAGIC SPIRIT - TOGETHER WE SING

William Barton shares the beauty and majesty of the world’s oldest living culture in Apii Thatini Mu Murtu (To sing and carry a coolamon on country together). This celebration of Kalkadoon country will resound through the Perth Concert Hall as William’s extraordinary voice and didgeridoo are magically woven together with the orchestra, creating a moving musical unity.

Quiet and reflective, Fauré’s Requiem is one of the most beloved of all choral works. Avoiding the fire and brimstone dramatics of a traditional Requiem Mass, Fauré instead offers music of peacefulness and serenity.

First Nations Creative Collaborations are supported by Bendat Family Foundation.

William Barton Live Performance

Join us for a special night of live music presented by award winning composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist – William Barton. William Barton is widely recognised as one of Australia’s leading didgeridoo players and composers.

For two decades, William Barton has forged a peerless profile as a performer and composer in the classical musical world, from the Philharmonic Orchestras of London and Berlin to historic events at Westminster Abbey for Commonwealth Day 2019, Anzac Cove and the Beijing Olympics. His awards include Winner of Best Original Score for a Mainstage Production at the 2018 Sydney Theatre Awards and Winner of Best Classical Album with ARIA for Birdsong At Dusk in 2012.
