Olsen Gallery - The Hidden Performance - William Barton

In the exhibition, Georgeson offers a deeply personal account of the Shoalhaven landscape that he and celebrated Indigenous musician William Barton collaborated within on the NSW South Coast. The body of work continues an ongoing dialogue pertaining to land and waterways through photography, film and sound, originally instigated by the Bundanon Trust Art Museum, and unveiled there in 2022. Hidden Theatre includes new and never-before-seen material.

Working together for the first time, Georgeson and Barton undertook an artistic residency at Bundanon in 2021. There they walked through the landscape with camera and didgeridoo in hand, composing, recording and experimenting with visuals and sound in response to Wodi Wodi Country. The pair perpetuated this close association offsite, tightly weaving together their responses.

Anchored by Barton’s original compositions, Georgeson’s photographs and films are edited in distinct acts, slowly orchestrating otherwise imperceptible interactions between sunlight, moonlight, fog and wind. Together, sound and image form a meditation on the ancient knowledge and histories held within the earth, water and skies of this place.

Hidden Theatre will showcase a series of still images alongside multiple film and sound environments.

The artists would like to acknowledge the ongoing custodianship of the Wodi Wodi and Yuin people, who have always been the rightful caretakers of the NSW South Coast region, and pay their respects to elders past, present and emerging.

Opening Event: Opening event Wednesday 15 February, 5 – 7pm, Artist’s talk Saturday 25 February from 1pm, including a live performance by William Barton.
